Is “LieMAX” a fair term?

The public nickname describes the gap between giant-theatre expectations and smaller IMAX rooms, but it is too crude to rate a modern cinema.

The original complaint is easiest to see at one physical scale. These are the sourced reference profiles, not a claim that every purpose-built or retrofit room has these dimensions.

Describe the system, maximum ratio, and screen size. That is more accurate than calling a specific cinema fake.

The argument in three parts

Where the name came from

The dispute spread after Aziz Ansari described paying a premium at AMC Burbank for a digital IMAX screen much smaller than the giant theatres he expected. A crowd-sourced map amplified the term. The evidence supports “popularised,” not “invented.”

What the complaint got right

Digital xenon enabled multiplex retrofits. An early measured sample found a large area gap from purpose-built Grand Theatre screens, while ticket pages rarely named the projector, dimensions, or maximum frame.

What laser changed

Laser improved resolution, contrast, brightness, colour capability, and black level over xenon. The upgrade is real, but the generic laser name still covers different configurations.

IMAX’s position

Screen size is one part of a system that also includes remastering, projection, sound, acoustics, calibration, and room geometry. A closer screen can preserve a wide field of view.

The remaining problem

That response is technically meaningful, but a plain IMAX label still does not identify the equipment or screen.

Bottom line: a smaller laser room can be excellent. It is still different from a purpose-built 1.43:1 room, and the booking flow should disclose that difference.

How to know what you are buying

Look for the exact laser amenity

A positive label is strong evidence that the venue uses one of IMAX's laser systems rather than its older xenon system.

Find published width and height

Published width and height give the most direct comparison of physical scale and reveal whether the screen is close to 1.43:1 or 1.90:1.

Treat photos as a last resort

A photo may distinguish a tall 1.43-shaped screen from a wide 1.90-shaped screen, but perspective, masking, curtains, and cropping can mislead.
